In an earlier issue I wrote about Herb and Dorothy Vogel, a former US Postal Employee and his wife, a former librarian at the New York Public Library who were able to amass a renowned art collection on their civil servant salaries. Now their stories have come to film in a documentary from writer-director Megumi Sasaki. Be sure to keep an eye out for this documentary at film fests. You can read more about the documentary at www.herbanddorothy.com. Sleep Furiously. Described as a “dreamy and lyrical portrait of a year in the life of a tiny Welsh hamlet called Trefeurig,” the films characters include “John Jones, a kindly mobile librarian who tooties across the verdant Welsh landscape in his jaunty yellow van…” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1235072/. Crime and Librarians Sadly librarians are not immune from breaking the law. Whenever they do, the newspapers love carrying stories of librarians gone bad. But for every librarian who commits a crime, there seem to be an equal number of librarians who have fallen victim to crime. All of the following headlines are real, expect for one. Can you guess which one it is? 1. Headline: Father Accused of Ramming Everett School Librarian The father is accused of using his vehicle to knock down an elementary school librarian over a dispute as to which entrance he’s supposed to use when dropping off his child at school. 2. Headline: NW Woman, 61, Fatally Stabbed in Long Island Attack. The woman, a retired school librarian from Northwest Washington, was stabbed multiple times by an intruder. 3. Headline: Texas Librarian Lynched over Banned Book A note claiming the librarian was killed for allowing “filth” in the library was found on the body of a slain public librarian. 4. Headline: New Kensington Man Who Assaulted Librarian Released The man assaulted the library director of the Greensburg Library when the director asked his staff to call the police after his wife was confronted about trying to steal a book from the library. 5. Librarian Characters Appear on Stage This year librarian characters have appeared in at least two plays in England. In Daniel Jamieson’s play Cobbo, lonely librarian Annie develops an affectionate relationship with a swan with a human past. You can read a review of the production at http://tinyurl.com/mneoa8. In Alphabetical Order, Michael Frayn’s comedy is set in a newspaper library. You can read a review of the production at http://tinyurl.com/mf9op6. ANSWERS: Headlines: Fact or Fiction 1. The headline is from an article that appeared in the May 26, 2009 the Beaumont Enterprise regarding the late Maurine Gray and her collection of more than 3,000 inanimate dogs.
