Newsletter (Oct. 2008)OCTOBER 2008 LIBRARIAN FUN Monthly newsletter pertaining to the topic of librarians. Librarian Song and Do-Wop You can always count on YouTube for some entertainment. You may want to check out the “Librarian Do-Wop” number (http://tinyurl.com/58dm23) from a short film that was entered into the 48 Hour Film Project in 2004. And while you’re watching YouTube, also check out Joe Uveges’ ”The Librarian Song” (http://tinyurl.com/362clf) from the November 2, 2007 When Freedom Calls concert in Colorado Springs. Halloween Outfits Forget that Naughty Librarian costume I mentioned a year ago. If you’re looking for ideas for a great outfit for Halloween, or other costumed, or library themed event, you must check out the library and literature themed outfits from the Project Runway-type event held at the September Illinois Library Association’s Conference. From this link (www.ila.org/events/photos_stacks2008.htm) you’ll also find further links to the YouTube videos of the fashion show. Talk about creativity! Roller Girl While we’re on the subject of shattering the stereotypical librarian image, The Globe and Mail (Toronto, Ont.) ran a story titled “Dewey by Day, Derby by Night” on September 18th about Yvette Ipsarelexi. Ipsarelexi, known as Stoli Von Stingray is a roller derby athlete with the Riot Girls Team. In the article she talks about how she gets to help people as a librarian, and then is quoted as saying “as a derby girl…I get to skate really fast, hit people and get hit and fall all over the place.” I don’t think anyone will mistake her for a meek little librarian. Break Time Entertainment Whether you work in a cube, or in an office, at one point you’ve probably experienced a really bad day and felt like hitting or breaking something in your cube. The next time you find yourself in that situation, or if you just need a little diversion, you may want to check out the “Cubicle Freakout” game from Eyegas Digital Media Ltd. at www.eyegas.com/cubiclefreakout/ Or if you simply need a little diversion in your day, cruise over to the Warrior Librarian’s Website (www.warriorlibrarian.com) and check out the “Interactive of the Week” section of her September newsletter. There’s a link there to a Life Magic website where you can undergo virtual cosmetic surgery. Ordo Bibliotheca Group on Facebook If you haven’t already heard, James Turner, the creator of the Rex Libris series has created an “Ordo Bibliotheca” group on Facebook. Check it out at http://tinyurl.com/68gs7k. Inkheart in the Theaters in January 2009 Although this movie is not about a librarian, book lovers are bound to find it appealing. To be released in theaters in the U.S. on January 23, 2009, Inkheart stars Brendan Frasier as a man who can bring characters to life from books. You can see the movie trailer and read more about it at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0494238/
